Plate and Frame

Plate and Frame heat exchangers are an alternate type of heat exchanger which utilizes a quantity of identical corrugated metal plates arranged in a parallel pattern separated by gaskets. Like Shell and Tube heat exchangers, they transfer heat between two flowing fluids. Plate and Frame heat exchangers provide higher thermal efficiencies than Shell and Tube heat exchangers in most applications. This type of exchanger is commonly used in lower temperature and pressure applications as they are limited by the temperature and pressure rating of the gaskets.

Versatile Construction

A wide variety of plate and/or frame construction materials are available, including 304 or 316 stainless steel, titanium, Hastelloy,® Incolloy,® and other metals. Various connection types are available to match the requirements of the application. Several gasket materials are also available for fluid compatibility.

Close-Approach & Temperature-Crossing

Applications with Close-Approach Temperatures <1-2°F (0.5-1.0°C) and Temperature-Crosses (when one fluid is heated or cooled beyond exiting temperature of the other fluid) can be satisfied in a relatively small footprint as it is a true counter-flow device with high heat transfer efficiency. These applications would require more costly, long, single-pass Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers requiring much larger installation footprints. This is an important factor in regeneration and heat recovery processes.
